‘Suddenly 20’ is a Thai remake of the Korean comedy ‘Miss Granny’ where a 70-year-old granny transforms into a beautiful 20-year-old young adult who gets a second chance in life. An enjoyable film that tackles poignant issues in a fun and humorous way.

A 70-year-old grumpy granny Parn is not only mean to her daughter-in-law, the overbearing lady doesn’t know that she’s not welcome in her family as well. A frequent visitor to the old folks home, she falls out with one of the residents of the home when a lady from her past confronted Parn about her selfish act that resulted in her bitter life.

Having come to terms with all that had happened, she wanders around the streets when she stumbles upon a vintage-looking photography studio. Always wanting to get a headshot done, she points to an Audrey Hepburn portrait, but little did she knew that the photoshoot was going to change her life. Parn is magically transformed into a 20-year-old pretty girl who is given the second chance to pursue her dream as a singer.

The new Parn (Davika Hoorne) embarks on her new life, getting a new makeover with her new looks and energy. She deliberately gets close to her grandson Boom (Kritsanapoom Pibulsonggram) and even joined his band. With a beautiful voice, she became the band’s lead vocalist and was talent-spotted by music producer Nutt (Saharat Sangkapreecha). With all the good things that were happening in her new life, Parn can’t bear to leave her new body, but time is running out before her family knows her true identity.

Actress Hoorne, as the young Parn, plays a very different role from her past projects like Pee Mak and Plae Kao. Her caricatured portrayal of a fish out of water role is not only comical but pretty captivating as well. There were moments where you can see nuances of the ‘granny’ in her soul, which makes for a good slapstick comedy.

Ultimately, Suddenly 20 is a pleasant movie that tackles societal issues that the elderly faces such as loneliness and hardships, in a goofy and light-hearted approach. But beneath all the quirky narrative is a heartbreaking story of family, love and sacrifice. For fans of Korean ‘Miss Granny’, this Thai remake doesn’t disappoint; and for those who are looking for some entertaining 2-hour outing at the movies, this is a great family movie for all ages.
