Synopsis Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s “Mulan,” in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honoured warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.

After a delay of nearly half a year, Disney's Mulan is finally in cinemas! The wait was long, but it was definitely worth it.

Disney's Mulan is retold in a slightly different angle to give a breath of fresh air of the old tale. We start of the film knowing that Mulan is born with 'chi' which is frowned upon for girls. She hides her talent and tries to grow up like an ordinary girl so she can protect her family's honour.

Due to incoming invaders, the king passed down an edict that every family has to conscript one male to serve the empire. As her ailing father is the only male in her family, Mulan stands at a crossroad. She has to decide to dishonour her family by masquerading as a male to protect her father or say goodbye to her father for one last time.

Niki Caro smartly used 'chi' to show the disparity between sex in ancient China. Males born with 'chi' are hailed as heroes but girls born with 'chi' are called witches. This is a fine example of a male doing something he is right, whereas a female is wrong. While the movie did it in a significant way, I felt like they over overemphasised on the concept of dishonour and shame as it was brought up in almost every part of the movie.

I LOVED the action scenes in Disney's Mulan though! Every scene looked well choreographed and was visually stunning. It's safe to say the film is very different but it still has the heart of the original movie. It doesn't even matter that it's not a musical.
