Despite its meandering and unfocused plot, what makes 'Make It Big Big" still watchable is the palpable chemistry shared amongst the cast who have worked together for decades.

Starring local comedians and radio personalities Mark Lee (who also directed this movie), Dennis Chew, Marcus Chin, and Chen Biyu, Make It Big Big is an ensemble comedy about four radio DJs and their various individual struggles. Known as the Breakfast Quartet, the four of them has, since 2015, been hosting a morning show on Mediacorp Radio Love 97.2 and is the most popular Chinese DJ group in Singapore. The quartet essentially play themselves on screen and the movie blends fact and fiction in a way that only fans in the know will appreciate.

Lee plays a movie director who was caught on video seemingly slapping a young girl who was unable to give him the performance he wanted. The video is uploaded onto social media and overnight, Lee is demonised and his reputation besmirched. Advertisers and investors pull out from working with him. Lee suddenly is unable to sustain his company and his longtime partner decides to quit.

Meanwhile, Chew is battling with insecurities. Viewers repeatedly criticise Chew, both on air and in person, for his increasingly unfunny jokes and wonder if he has lost his comedic edge. Chen, on the other hand, struggles with loneliness and deals with it through her unhealthy Andy Lau idol obsession. Chin has to deal with financial issues arising from the exorbitant alimony he has to pay to his ex-wife.

Make It Big Big’s ambitious attempt to tell the stories of four characters, with each story exploring an issue, renders the film unfocused and meandering at most times. But what makes the film still watchable is the palpable chemistry shared amongst the cast who have worked together for decades. This is a film made for fans.
