Grace (Samara Weaving) and Alex (Mark O'Brien) are going to be married at Alex’s family’s palatial estate. Alex belongs to the wealthy Le Domas family dynasty, which has built their massive fortune on the gaming industry, selling predominantly card and board games. As part of an eccentric family tradition, whenever someone marries into the Le Domas family, they have to play a game. 

What game to play is decided by drawing a card. Grace draws a card that reads Hide-and-Seek and she innocently thinks that’s what they are going to play. She only discovers what the game truly entails when, hiding behind the bed, one of the family members, mistaking her for Grace, accidentally shoots and kills one of the family’s three maids. Grace quickly wises up and arms herself and with Alex’s help, they try to escape. But it’s not so easy. The house is on lockdown. 

Sounds like a B-movie gory horror schlockfest? Think again. The film is gory, yes, though not in a repulsive way; it is also compulsively funny. Samara Weaving, with her jitteriness and clumsiness, plays her part of the average girl thrown into a madhouse situation so well. Her face is so expressive that she’s engrossingly watchable. 

Like Get Out, Ready or Not is so unexpectedly good that it’s surprising. It’s going to be a breakout film for both the directors and Weaving.
