An uninspired and unfunny comedy spy film

Comedy spy action film The Rookies sees Taiwanese actor Derek Wang play Feng Zhao, an extreme sports enthusiast who, after a case of mistaken identity, gets unwittingly recruited into an international spy organization by expert spy agent Bruce (Milla Jovovich).

He then teams up with police officer Miao Miao (Sandrine Pinna) and her good friend Shan Shan (Timmy Xu) to steal back a priceless treasure from a wealthy businessman, who has plans of global destruction. And then some more things happen, none of which really makes sense.

The film is a hodge-potch patchwork of messily staged action sequences and low-brow slapstick comedy. Characters come across as more cartoon caricatures than human beings. One expects more from Alan Yuen, the director who made the police actioner Firestorm.
