Minions 2: The Rise of Gru isn’t just the sequel to the Despicable Me franchise spin-off prequel but the cornerstone of supervillain Gru, with the Minions doing what they do best - play supporting characters that steal the show and hearts of viewers.

The animated film, set in the 70s, follows 12-year-old Gru growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a team of supervillains known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, Gru interviews to become their newest member.

It does not go well, and things only get worse after Gru steals a precious stone from them with the help of Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Otto, and the other Minions and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. What entails is an adventurous journey of finding one’s self, a journey that’s not short of laughs and action that keep viewers entertained throughout.

The new characters are voiced by Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, Alan Arkin, Danny Trejo, Jean-Claude van Damme, Lucy Lawless and Dolph Lundgren, with Steve Carrell, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews returning. Despite the impressive line up, none quite stands out as memorable as Carrell who’s voiced his character for five films and counting.

In addition to the named Minions fans are familiar with (Kevin, Stuart and Bob), Otto brings to the table a lovable character that proves every Minion deserves a turn in the spotlight. Who wouldn’t feel for a relatable character that longs for approval and acceptance?

Minions 2: The Rise of Gru knows its stakes for continuing on the legacy of the popular franchise, delivering a sequel that is arguably more superior to its predecessor - a feat that most sequels fail to achieve. The 70s jokes and references may fly over the head of younger audiences but adults will appreciate the good chuckle it brings. It's safe to say that the Minions are here to stay and we’re just happy to be basking in the joy of it all.
