With a title as absurd as Cocaine Bear, you’ll know not to take this film too seriously. It even features Wikipedia-sourced quotes if anyone needed further affirmation!

Borrowing from the true story of a black bear that overdosed on cocaine back in 1985, Cocaine Bear does a solid undertaking of doubling down on the absurdity and filling in the blanks on what may have transpired in the bear’s coked up state before it died – by making it go on a killing spree in a small town of unassuming inhabitants. The absurdity of the plot offsets the terror at times but the amusement lies in the film balancing the two with every kill.

Directed by actress-turned-filmmaker Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 2, Charlie's Angels), Cocaine Bear features an ensemble cast consisting of Keri Russell (The Americans), O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Christian Convery (Netflix's Sweet Tooth), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Margo Martindale (The Americans), and Ray Liotta (Field of Dreams, Goodfellas).

We can't be sure of what went on behind the scenes but we get the feeling the cast enjoyed their time on this (especially the late Liotta who has since passed). They are greatly divided to cover more ground within the film and each give a satisfactory performance but young Convery stands out as a scene stealer against his adult co-stars, portraying the brazen Henry who encounters the bear after getting high with his friend Dee Dee (Prince).

The drugged bear may be computer-generated, however, that doesn’t make it any less terrifying. The dark comedy action film is not short of laughs but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Cocaine Bear doesn’t hold back. If Ray Liotta says it looks good, you take his word for it.

Cocaine Bear’s violent rampage is a highly entertaining gorefest. Go see it in cinemas if you’re up for some mindless good fun!
