From director Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise) and writer Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) comes the star-studded spy action comedy, Argylle.

The film follows Elly Conway, an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, who gets drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books, featuring a fictional secret agent named Argylle, get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aidan, an undercover spy, shows up to save her from being kidnapped or killed, Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing and no one are what they seem, including to the discovery that Agent Argylle, in fact, exists for real.

Features an ensemble cast that includes Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Howard fronts the film as Elly Conway, displaying her range of talent as the film progresses. She shares most screentime with the scene-stealing Rockwell’s Aidan whose appearance immediately elevates the film. The charismatic actor juggles action and comedy with such finesse, his undeniable swagger is not lost underneath the corny dad jokes and unassuming spy get-up. In contrast is the Bond-esque Cavill who is typecast here as the titular secret agent, a role seemingly written specifically with him in mind. The rest of the cast are relegated to supporting roles merely planted to add clout or serve the main players. It’s unfortunate big names like Jackson and Cena are given little to deal with but it’s expected of a film with this big an ensemble to face screentime issues.

Despite joining a long list of films of its genre, Argylle still manages to stun and surprise with refreshing new tricks. Coming from the man behind the Kingsman franchise, you can anticipate interesting and unexpected twists that takes the film to a higher level. As fun and exciting as it may be though, the film does tend to suffer from dreariness at times when it takes a break from the action with exposition. We will leave it as that as it is pertinent for our review to avoid giving away too much to preserve viewer experience.

All in all, Argylle is more than just a good time at the cinemas that has layers setting it apart from the usual action-packed spy comedies you may be used to.
