45 and 9 years since Mad Max and Mad Max: Fury Road, we are once again pulled into George Miller’s post-apocalyptic world. Only this time, the focus is on someone else – it's all eyes on Furiosa.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga tells the story of a young Imperator Furiosa (originated by Charlize Theron in Fury Road) and it proves to be more than just a gratuitious spin-off, holding its own against its predecessors in the franchise.

The film follows Furiosa’s journey in the Wastelands (before the events of Fury Road) after having been abducted by the Warlord Dementus. Finding her place in The Citadel run by Immortan Joe, Furiosa uses her resources to plan her escape back to her homeland and plot revenge on Dementus for the death of her mother.

The plot is as straightforward as can be but there’s never a dull moment in the action-packed adventure and that’s thanks to strong performances from the cast and the consistency of its award-winning worldbuilding that trickled down from Fury Road. Not to mention a couple of intense sequences that'll leave you gripping onto the edge of your seat.

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Menu, Last Night In Soho) plays the titular character in this film, It doesn’t matter that she looks nothing like Theron because of how she deftly embodies Furiosa in this prequel. There’s much ferocity in the stillness of her glare, reminiscent of her critically-acclaimed role as Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. Sharing the spotlight with her is Chris Hemsworth as Dementus. Best known for playing the superhero Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s refreshing to see the actor tackle a villainous role on the big screen. It’s not just the flip in morality that makes his performance appealing, it’s the way he’s so unhighed as he chews through every scene with his rambunctious character, adding much flair and contrast to the stoicness of Furiosa. They do say bad guys have more fun and it can’t be more apparent here.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might not supass its predecessor but the essence of what made Fury Road a success is very much present in its veins. Miller’s clear vision has birth yet another perfectly crafted masterpiece with great attention to detail on all fronts. You don't need to have seen any of the Mad Max films to enjoy Furiosa in all her glory.
