The latest local film to hit theatres is
That Girl in Pinafore
, directed by Chia Yee Wei, tells a teenage romance story about dreams, friendships and their love for Xinyao music.
During the press conference held at Hood Bar and Cafe yesterday, the cast and director shared some of their most memorable experiences filming the movie.

That Girl in Pinafore
is the first Singapore film in 15 years to celebrate the success of Xinyao movement. The extended form for Xinyao is “Xin jia po ge yao” which essentially means Singapore songs. Uniquely to Singapore and familiar to the locals here, these acoustic Xinyao tunes can be heard in the movie with a slightly heavier and rock rhythm.

Starring Project Superstar Season 2 winner Daren Tan, MediaCorp actress Julie Tan, twin sisters Jayley Woo and Heyley Woo, and new faces like Kenny Khoo, Sherly Ng, Seah Jiaqing and Kelvin Mun.
We first met this bunch of bubbly group earlier in March during the
First Look media conference
, and as expected, their friendship bonds were still strong as they bickered, laughed and joked with one another.
When asked about quarrels during production, Julie and the two sisters admitted to having disputes on set due to clash of opinions. They further explained as each had a different perspective on the way they looked at things, conflict arises among the trio they even cried. Tan added that because of the quarrels and disputes, they became closer with one another.
One of the memorable scenes in the movie was the circulation of pornographic magazines in school among the boys. Though one would reference the scene to Taiwan’s popular coming-of-age movie
You Are the Apple of My Eye
, director Chai said that he personally witnessed the situation during his school days.

In the movie, all the cast sang and dance to numerous Xinyao tunes which can be found in their movie soundtrack, sold at all LaserFlair stores. Xinyao music brought the two leads closer, but it was the love for music that bonded the ensemble together, which was the catalyst in making the film successful.
