Weekend Box Office: No Sucker Punch On Wimpy Kid

Fox seems to have found itself a new little cash cow. While Diary of a Wimpy Kid is no Harry Potter franchise, it's turning tidy profits following the Saw model: crank out one semi-popular movie a year on a cheap budget and watch the money roll in.
Last Spring Break Diary of a Wimpy Kid, filmed for a simple $15 million, enjoyed a $22 million opening, earning $64 million total. One year later a sequel is following in its footsteps. Bankrolled for $20 million, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules debuted at number one with $24 million.
The number two spot went to Sucker Punch, which took in $19 million this weekend against an $82 million budget.
Animated Rango finally crossed the $100 million mark in its fourth weekend. Its narrow dance with profitability offers better prospects than Mars Needs Moms, another CG adventure which started its third week. With only $26 million in worldwide sales in the bank so far, it's a far cry from making back its $150 budget and a strong candidate for biggest box office bomb of the year.
