The Singapore International Film Festival Returns after Two-year Hiatus, with 147 Films!

By InCinemas  /  29 Oct 2014 (Wednesday)

The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), the largest and longest-running film event returns for its 25th edition, featuring 147 films from 50 countries!

The films will be screened across 11 sections with 25 films making their world premiere at the festival and 20 other films making their Asian premiere.

“For me, the film festival has been a tradition and a platform for local and regional filmmakers to be here…it’s a great opportunity to see very dynamic talents,” said Mike Wiluan, Chairman of SGIFF, at the press conference held at the ArtScience Museum.

Opening the festival will be the film titled ‘Unlucky Plaza’ by local filmmaker Ken Kwek. The film made its premiere screening at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year to a sold-out audience.

“I didn’t know it’ll be an opening film. I mean I set out to make a film, to tell an exciting, traumatic story and I did not have any expectations of its performance both locally and internationally,” said Kwek in a small group interview.

The Singapore Panorama will feature a range of local films, with a couple of new features making their world premiere at the festival, such as festival regulars Han Yew Kwang, Kan Lume and Liao Jiekai.

Directors Rick Aw and Jason Lai will showcase their debut features - Standing in Still Water and Ms J Contemplates Her Choice with singer and actress Kit Chan in her very first feature film.

In addition to the Asian Feature Film category, the competition section introduced a new component this year, the Southeast Asian Short Film competition, as part of the festival’s Silver Screen Awards - to recognise the brightest filmmaking talents from both Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia.

Stay tuned to InCinemas for we will be bringing you highlights and recommendations of the festival!
