From the wrong announcement to candies arriving in little parachutes, let’s relive all the crazy and most memorable moments from the 89th Academy Awards.
This is one Oscars faux pas that goes down in history. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, stars of 1967's classic Bonnie and Clyde read the wrong recipients for the said biggest award of the night: Best Picture! The cast of La La Land took the stage to thank their supporters, only to be cut halfway and told that Moonlight had, in fact, won the coveted award. Beatty then went back up to clarify and explained the snafu - he received the wrong envelope that was stated ‘Emma Stone, Best Actress’ - the penultimate award that was given out to Stone.
Yes Emma, we feel you...
We know these celebrities don’t get to munch on pizzas and burgers till the awards are over. This year, the Oscars producers decided to hand them some finger-food like candies, cookies and doughnuts… not like the pizza delivery way, but via mini parachutes that drop to the ground, in the hands of the lucky zombies!

Hidden Figures leading ladies Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae went on stage to present the ‘Best Documentary’ award. Hensen went backstage and brought out the real-life Katherine Johnson (the role she played in Hidden Figures) out on the Oscars stage to thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the crowd. The 98-year-old physicist and mathematician at NASA was one of the ladies who calculated trajectories and launch windows for many space flights during her time at NASA.
- Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon’s 'Bromance'
We all kinda know the beef between Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon. In Kimmel’s opening monologue, he attempted to bury the hatchet with Damon, not before taking the chance to diss him by calling him selfish. All that little banter and ‘shading’ doesn’t end there. When Damon came on stage with his buddy Ben Affleck to present an award, he was announced as ‘Ben Affleck and guest’, and was cut off by the usual orchestral music, well, conducted by Kimmel himself…. and we love that!
Best Foreign Film - Director Protests Trump’s Travel Ban
Iran’s ‘The Salesman’ won the award for the Best Foreign-language film but wasn’t there to receive the award for a definitive reason: a protest against the controversial travel ban for seven countries in the Middle East by President Donald Trump. He, however, left a message for Anousheh Ansari, the first Iranian woman in space, to read out his thank-you message and his reason for his disappearance. Many people in the audience were seen clapping and cheering for Ansari.
- Viola Davis’ Emotional speech
What can we say, when Viola Davis took the stage to receive her Best Supporting Award for her amazing performance in ‘Fences’, she said in tears: “I became an artist, and thank God I did because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.”
- Meryl Streep’s 'Overrated' Standing Ovation
It’s quite common to see thousands of people giving a standing ovation to Queen Meryl Streep, but this time, her standing ovation was a little different - a cue from Jimmy Kimmel to the audiences at the Dolby Theatre to stand up for the ‘overrated actress’ - a diss from Trump with regards to her Golden Globes speech.
Queen Meryl, of course, stood up and receive her applause from her civilians with grace.
- Jackie Chan and his pandas at the red carpet
International superstar Jackie Chan was awarded the honorary Oscar last year for his lifetime achievements and attended the Academy Awards show with his fellow awardees. At the red carpet, Chan was holding two panda soft toys. “I am the ambassador of panda,’ he explained at one interview. Erm.. Hokayyyy…?
