Baz Luhrmann's Hip Hop Netflix series ‘The Get Down’ is making its grand return to screens today!

InCinemas spoke with Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola and Shameik Moore at a New York event in February where they share their filming experiences as Ezekiel "Zeke" Figuero, Mylene Cru z and Shaolin Fantastic respectively.

The continuation of the series fast forwards to 1978, a full year after the events which took place in Part I, though still a continuation of its retelling of the birth of hip-hop, as seen through the eyes of a group of teenagers living in the Bronx.

“Part 2 is where the Get Down brothers are very successful with their music. Mylene is also busy with her disco career. It shows the danger of the business, and how to balance your love life with your career and not really knowing which path you should take,” explained Smith.

He added: “Essentially, we are going to have a lot more cool music and higher stakes for the characters.”

As with any of Luhrmann’s productions, expect great performance scenes and beautiful shots in the continuation, for the filmmaker, has impressed us with his past big-budget films such as Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby.

When the musical drama ‘The Get Down’ first premiered its first six episodes globally on August 12, 2016, on Netflix, it became an instant hit, especially for its vibrant music and cinematography of the show.

For the young actors, they admitted that the show had somewhat changed their lives.

“Free clothes,” joked Moore. "The show gave me more opportunities... and (I've gained) respect as an actor!"

“For me, it’s about gaining confidence,” shared the 20-year-old actress. “I’ve learned a lot about myself. I didn’t know if I was a good actress before this, but after the show came out and people came up to me telling me that they liked the show and my performance, it helps me with my self-confidence. Also, my voice got better from this show. I could hit notes that I couldn’t do before because I was forced to use a part of my voice that I really never did… like a gospel powerhouse voice!”

Smith, who also starred in Paper Towns, shared that it was director Baz Luhrmann that ‘gave me the confidence as an artist’.

“He treats us as collaborators and that I am part of telling the story of Ezekiel,” said the 21-year-old actor.
