Korean film Default about Asian Financial Crisis bullish at the box office

By Say Peng  /  04 Jan 2019 (Friday)

Korean financial thriller film, Default, has been very bullish at the Korean box office.

In 12 days from its release on 28 November 2018, the film has broken even, amassing more than US$20 million of box office revenue, breaking the record to become the highest November opening in South Korea box office history.

Directed by Choi Kook-hee, and starring Kim Hye-soo ('A Special Lady'), Yoo Ah-in ('Burning'), and French actor Vincent Cassel ('Ocean's Thirteen'), Default is the first Korean movie to depict the consequences and effects of the Asian Financial Crisis.

The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it was sold to more than a dozen countries, including Japan, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, and the United States.

The film has been globally well received critically and commercially.
