Bombs away for Sam Mendes' WWI epic 1917

By Say Peng  /  07 Aug 2019 (Wednesday)

Following two highly successful Bond films - Skyfall and Spectre - British director Sam Mendes is tackling an even bigger subject: World War I.

In 1917, at the height of World War I, two young British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, are given an impossible mission: deliver a message, deep in enemy territory, that will stop their own men, and Blake's own brother, from walking straight into a deadly trap.

Leading the cast are George McKay (Captain Fantastic) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon on Game of Thrones), supported by Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Mark Strong (The Imitation Game), and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones).

Acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins reteamed with Mendes to shoot the film.

Not a stranger to war material, Mendes directed the biographical war film Jarhead in 2005, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

After an illustrious theatre career, Mendes first established himself in the movie world when his debut film American Beauty won the Oscars for Best Picture. His 2008 romantic drama Revolutionary Road starred his then-wife Kate Winslet and Leonard DiCaprio.

1917 will be released in cinemas on 9 January 2020.
