Watch Educational Documentaries on YouTube for Free, Courtesy of Netflix!

By Rachelle  /  21 Apr 2020 (Tuesday)

Netflix has released 10 of its educational documentaries on YouTube to give teachers free content to screen for their virtual classrooms.

The free documentaries include the David Attenborough-narrated Our Planet, which explores the various wonders of the natural world, and Ava DuVernay’s 13th, which examines the 13th Amendment, mass criminalization, and the American prison industry.

Doesn’t matter if you’re a teacher or not, the content is currently free for your viewing so why not get yourself educated with some of the following:

Explained
Explained is an American documentary television series, with episodes average between 16–18 minutes, each focusing on a different topic. Each episode is also voiced by a different guest narrator.

An example of one of the episodes available is as seen above. Titled Music, the episode is a brief history of music, and a discussion on the definitions of music and rhythm, featuring Tokimonsta.

Chasing Coral
Chasing Coral is a 2017 documentary film about a team of divers, scientists and photographers around the world who document the disappearance of coral reefs.

Period. End of Sentence.
Period. End of Sentence. is a 2018 documentary short film directed by Rayka Zehtabchi about Indian women leading a quiet sexual revolution. The documentary short follows a group of local women in Hapur, India, as they learn how to operate a machine that makes low-cost, biodegradable sanitary pads, which they sell to other women at affordable prices. This not only helps to improve feminine hygiene by providing access to basic products but also supports and empowers the women to shed the taboos in India surrounding menstruation – all while contributing to the economic future of their community. The film is inspired from the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, India.

Zion
Zion is a 2018 short documentary film film following Zion Clark, born without legs, growing up in foster care and became a wrestler.

The documentaries are currently only available in English but Netflix said that subtitles will soon be available later in the week.
