AJOOMMA 《花路阿朱妈》, the first ever Singapore-South Korea co-produced feature film, will hold its world premiere at the 27th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in 7 October!
This marks the first time a Singapore film, since Eric Khoo's MEE POK MAN (1996) and Royston Tan's 15 (2003), is selected for competition at BIFF’s well established New Currents competition.
New Currents, which is the main competition section at BIFF, has become an entry point for emerging directors over the past 26 years in the discovery of new Asian films. Many directors, who were introduced in the section, not only left their marks on the global stage beyond Asia, but also paved the way for new Asian cinema.
Producer Anthony Chen said:
It is especially fitting for our film AJOOMMA to premiere at Busan because it is the first Singapore-Korea co-production and so much of the film was shot in South Korea. This is definitely the must-watch Singapore film this year!
Director He Shuming added:
To be able to premiere my debut feature film AJOOMMA in competition at Busan is an incredible honour. While I’m looking forward to reunite with my Korean cast and crew, I’m also thrilled to be able to finally share this labour of love with our audience back home in Singapore.
AJOOMMA marks veteran Singaporean actress Hong Hui Fang’s first leading role in a feature film where she co-stars with talented Korean actors including Jung Dong-hwan, Kang Hyung-suk and Yeo Jin-goo, who will make a special appearance. Local actor Shane Pow also plays a supporting role in the film.
AJOOMMA follows the story of Auntie (Hong Huifang), a middle-aged Singaporean woman who has dedicated the best years of her life to caring for her family. Now widowed with her grown up son, Sam (Shane Pow) who is about to fly the roost, Auntie is left to contend with a whole new identity beyond her roles of daughter, wife, and mother.
A solo trip to Korea becomes a wild adventure for Auntie where she embarks on an unexpected roller coaster ride where hearts flutter and unlikely bonds are formed.
AJOOMMA will open in Singapore cinemas on 27 October.
