OSCAR BLOG #9: Top 5 Highlights of Oscar Night 2012!

By InCinemas  /  27 Feb 2012 (Monday)
In our OSCAR BLOG #9, InCinemas presents to you five unforgettable moments of this year's Oscar ceremony! These moments left us in shock, in awe, in laughter, and in tears!

Hit the jump button...

#5 -  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo winning Best Film Editing.

This left us...in shock!

In any other year, the film would have deserved the Oscar for Best Film Editing. But this came as a complete shock to us because the nominees Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter previously won last year for the same award for The Social Network. We bet no one saw this coming, and even the winners themselves felt embarrassed and quickly said a few words and walked off the stage!

Here's what they said:
Kirk Baxter: We weren’t expecting this.
Angus Wall: No.

Kirk: I’d like to thank the Academy.
Angus: We’re missing some very important people up here with us: primarily David, who’s not here tonight, but Céan and Steven Zaillian and Scott Rudin.

Kirk: There’s the Roons…miss the black tonight. [Points at Rooney Mara]
Angus: All the cast, and…God this is unbelievable.

Kirk: Let’s get out of here.
Angus: We’re editors so thank you.

#4 - George Clooney kissing Billy Crystal during the opening montage.

This left us...in shock and laughter!

Spoofing an emotional scene in The Descendants, the montage showcased some of the films up for Best Picture. But the best part was the connection of lips between Clooney and Crystal that left everyone in laughter.

#3 - Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell badly playing the cymbals while on the way up to the stage to present an award.

This left us...in laughter!

They played the cymbals in front of seated couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, with both of them looking on bemused. They walked up to the stage, and continued to play the cymbals with no emotion. They then fumbled with the cymbals, and dropped them to the ground, before awkwardly picking them up. They then announced the nominees and the winner.

While it became a bit overdone, and the novelty wearing off after a short while, it was still one of the funniest comic set-pieces of the show.

#2 - Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog from The Muppets introducing an ode to the magic of going to the movies, which was performed by the Cirque du Soleil.

This left us...in awe!

Seeing the two key characters of The Muppets "live" as presenters on Oscar night made us happy and excited, in a prelude to what was to come - a stunning, incredible performance by the members of the Cirque du Soleil, as they execute death-defying stunts above the audience, and flip and contort their bodies on stage in a beautiful show of movement, flexibility, and precise timing. Simply magical!

#1 - Esperanza Spalding singing "What a Wonderful World" for the In Memoriam segment of the show.

This left us...in tears.

Honouring the stars, filmmakers, and people who had spent their entire lives contributing to films that the world had lost in the past year, this touching tribute was emotionally overwhelming as images of greats like director Sidney Lumet, technopreneur Steve Jobs, singer/actress Whitney Houston, and star Elizabeth Taylor, among many more, graced the big screen one final time.

We hope you had enjoyed the Oscars this year. A repeat telecast of the Oscars will be shown on FOX Movies Premium (StarHub TV Ch. 622 / 662 HD) on Monday 27 February, 8:30PM (SGT).
