New Trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix Shows the X-Men Breaking Apart

The second trailer for Simon Kinberg’s
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
is now online, providing a glimpse of the tense battle between Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix and the X-men. The film picks up from 1992 after the events of
X-Men: Apocalypse
where the X-Men attempt to defuse the erratic and uncontrollable powers of a fellow member, Grey (played by Sophie Turner). It doesn’t help that she has a skilled mind-control psychic (played by Jessica Chastain) fuelling her villainous side.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
is said to be the last (if not, the penultimate) instalment from Fox’s X-Men series before the Disney-Fox deal comes in place that no one knows the fate of these fan-favourite on-screen mutants.
Turner stars alongside James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver).
[Spoiler Alert]
You have been warned. Though a quick Google and you'd probably be able to find out which mutant is going to die, take this as an official spoiler warning.
Right from the get-go, the trailer wants us to believe that Jean kills her friend Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). And with lines like ‘why did you make me do that, she was my friend’, along with the funeral scene towards the middle of the 3-minute trailer all points to a mutant’s death.
Director Simon Kinberg talked to
Entertainment Weekly
and confirmed that Mystique indeed dies in this film, which sparks an internal debate between the remaining mutants - if they decide to kill or save their friend. In the article, he also talks about Chastain's character, and working with Turner to bring out her darker side for this movie.
